Laura:
A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with SPG5a, not letters that anyone really wants after their name! In summary I have a progressive condition that affects the lower half of my body, with the outlook being based on acquiring a set of wheels to replace my legs. I’m in my 30’s and have children who enjoy having an active mum. I enjoy being their active mum. The feeling of being left behind really fuelled my search for change.
Having grown up in Cornwall and experienced the woodland and coastal trails I needed something suitable for the Cornish terrain. I’d been missing out on the adventures with the kids as I couldn’t walk that far nor walk fast enough to keep up.
I can’t say that I have ever been particularly sporty (running this business is the only running I do!) But I do like to stay active. Involvement in sport at any level increases self-esteem and enhances quality of life.
Honestly, it has been a challenge adjusting to a slower pace, coming to terms with that, then my condition progressing and having to repeat the process. Add this to losing out on those adventures with the kids, and the result is something needing to be done. This wasn’t just about the physical benefits, this was the emotional gains, the sense of inclusion and that feeling of independence.
I was directed to a shop specialising in equipment for active disabled people. The result was obtaining a Sport-on XCR handcycle. This changed my life! There has been a great sense of accomplishment, from my first ride, to building in confidence and taking on hills, joining in with local bike groups and the occasional sportive for charity.
Going to the woods and riding around with my kids, my daughter said to me ‘'I love this, I’ve got adventure mum back again’'
I hope the XCR handcycle can open up a world of freedom and independence for you like it has for me.
